Barielle Shades

A month or so ago, Barielle added a ton of new colors to their Shades line of nail polish, and they kindly to sent some bottles for me and my buddy Lucy to try out.

Eli's Magic is a bright pink creme. I used three coats (no topcoat); I maybe could have stopped at two, but I thought I saw some visible nail line at that point so kept painting. I'd consider this a basic color for summer; you may already have something similar in your stash but if not this would fill that slot nicely.

Starry Sky is small silver hex glitter in a clear base. This one looked like a layering polish to me, so I put it on over Eli's Magic. I used two coats of Starry Sky. It was pretty easy to get the glitter out of the bottle and onto the nail without any fishing or pushing needed. It lays fairly flat, too; I didn't use topcoat here. The glitter pieces are very shiny; you can see the pink from my other nails reflected in some of them.

Shannon's Attitude is holo bar glitter and tiny holo glitter in a warm purple base. I wasn't sure how sheer it would be, so put two coats of Eli's Magic on one nail first so I could see how the glitter would look with a base color as well as on its own. Then I put on three coats of Shannon's Attitude, which did turn out to be sheer. The bar glitter in this is a bit on the wiggly side, if the pieces were any narrower, I'd probably call it a string glitter. For all that, though, it does lay pretty flat on the nail.

End of the Rainbow is a teal shimmer (not gold, as one might expect based on the name; I've never heard of a pot of teal at the end of a rainbow). I used three coats, and in some lights at some angles that still looked a tiny bit short of opaque though mostly it was fine.

At some angles, I thought I could see a slight blue shift in End of the Rainbow.

Just for fun, I tried adding two coats of Shannon's Attitude over End of the Rainbow on some of my nails. That really brought out the blue in End of the Rainbow. I liked this combination much better than Shannon's Attitude over Eli's Magic; it seems more interesting somehow. (I'd also like to switch around the names; a holo glitter seems more magical than a pink creme, no matter how bright the pink.)

You can get these on the Barielle website, though always look for swatches before you order since the photos and descriptions there don't always give enough information for my taste (Shannon's Attitude is described as "jelly purple with foil flakes" and the picture shows silver glitter, not holo). They're also available at other etailers, though I'm not sure if all the new colors have rolled out everywhere yet.
