| New shoes for kids a passion project for Brighton athlete, mom - Livingston Daily Posted: 15 Jul 2019 04:00 AM PDT As a former professional athlete Sarah Boyle is used to setting goals and achieving them. Now the Brighton mom, who qualified for the 2016 Olympic Trials in steeplechase, is taking that motivation from the track to local schools. New Kicks for Kids was created by Boyle, 33, earlier this year as a way to provide shoes to kids in Livingston County that might not be able to afford them. She initially wondered how great the need would be in Livingston County but was told there was a need by "teachers who are with students day in and day out." Within the last four months the organization has been able to give out nearly 100 pairs of shoes and Boyle hopes to donate more this coming school year. Originally she focused on supplying shoes just for runners but the mother of two expanded her vision to kids with any type of activity. "It's impactful to be able to supply shoes, whether or not it's running related," she said. "l'm happy to see little kids getting good shoes." She said support has come from people buying and donating shoes, different shoe companies donating and community members contributing financially. Currently the organization is focused on Livingston County schools but Boyle said they have traveled outside the county to supply shoes as well. Ideally she would love to serve all of Southeast Michigan. New Kicks for Kids is partnering with another local nonprofit, the Knuth Family Foundation, which awards college scholarships to high school athletes. Boyle said the nomination process to receive new shoes is simple – all teachers and coaches have to do is send her an email. "We're not gonna do a background check or put you through any loopholes," Boyle said. "The teachers know who needs help."
